Responsibilities

The Spiritual Care Coordinator reports to the Psychosocial Services Director regarding issues related to Hospice clients and services and to the Director of Pastoral Care with spiritual care questions.

 

This position is responsible for assuring that client/families are offered the spiritual support of their choice; functions as primary spiritual support to those clients and families who so request; functions as liaison between client/family and their chosen religious support as needed; represents Hospice to clergy in the community; provides spiritual support and guidance to fellow team members in working with Hospice clients and their families.

 

This position is responsible for delivery of quality service, promoting good public relations, and for upholding the mission and standards of the facility.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides direct spiritual counseling and support to clients and families.
  • Contacts clergy of a particular faith on the family or client's behalf.
  • Serves as liaison with client/family's religious support as needed. Documents all interactions with family, client and their clergy for Hospice records within regulatory guidelines in the electronic medical record.
  • Conducts funeral service for families not affiliated with a church who desire a religious service.
  • Maintains a resource group of clergy to whom care can be delegated.
  • Works with staff and clergy from the community to develop sensitivity to the spiritual concerns of persons experiencing terminal illness and loss.
  • Maintains contact with family as needed after client's death to provide continued spiritual support, or will facilitate such spiritual contact through other clergy in the community.
  • Assists in the teaching and supervision of volunteer clergy and provides the community outreach to enlist such volunteer services.
  • Participates in agency and community health programs as requested to promote growth and understanding of the spiritual component of hospice services.
  • Participates as a core member of Hospice IDG.
  • Supports fellow team members in problem solving and strives to contribute to an emotionally supportive team environment.
  • Attends workshops and training sessions on hospice and terminal care provision as appropriate.
  • Participates as a team member to ensure that the department work loads and goals are met.
  • Demonstrates professionalism through appropriate dress and conduct.
  • Maintains knowledge of and adheres to established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participates in organizational departmental goals and performance improvement activities.
  • Adapts to changing work load and work environment.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work to complete responsibilities according to plan and within established time lines.
  • Maintains a positive outlook toward employer, work responsibilities and customers.
  • Follows safety and infection control policies and practices of the organization.
  • Assures delivery of optimum service by following assigned work schedule.
  • Participates in personal and professional growth by attending mandatory in services and scheduled department meetings.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Participates in orienting of Hospice nurses, social workers and volunteers, re: the Spiritual Care Component.

Qualifications

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

Nebraska Driver's license and current automobile insurance is required.

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING, AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Graduate of an accredited seminary or school of theology.  One year of experience working with families facing serious illness or death.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to demonstrate knowledge of emotional effects of death, grief and loss. Ability to demonstrate openness, flexibility and ecumenism in ministry. Knowledge of counseling skills and ability to implement these skills required. Must demonstrate clear verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of and computer skills to be used for documentation.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Travel is required to home environments. The work requires emotional, spiritual, and mental stability.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB

Physical stamina and mobility for traveling to clients' homes for visits.
