Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing assistance and giving personal care to residents as assigned by immediate supervisor, for which training and competency has been demonstrated.  Responsible for providing quality care by competently and thoroughly addressing the physical, mental and psychosocial needs of residents. This position is responsible for working to fulfill the goals and objectives of the Nursing Department and Tabitha Home, Inc. This position is responsible for delivery of quality service, promoting good public relations and for upholding the mission and standards of the organization. This position is responsible for supporting Tabitha’s philosophy of L.I.V.E:  Love your job, Invite optimism, Vision success, Embrace the Mission.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Demonstrates commitment to Tabitha’s Crew Code of conduct.

  2. Provides and/or assists with providing, while promoting optimum resident independence, activities of daily living, including but not limited to, bathing, dressing, grooming, transfer and ambulation, toileting, eating and use of speech, language or other functional communication systems for residents.

  3. Assists with basic therapeutic care not requiring nursing judgment, such as obtaining heights and weights and measuring vital signs.

  4. Reports any change in resident condition immediately to appropriate person to assure quality and continuity of care and adjustments to plan or care as needed.

  5. Personally follows appropriate safety policies and procedures of facility and regulatory agencies, reports all broken and malfunctioning equipment immediately, follows disaster plans during participation in preparedness drills and actual emergencies and maintains a neat orderly work environment.

  6. Personally follows appropriate infection and control policies and procedures of facility and regulatory agencies.

  7. Prioritizes assignments to complete care for residents in allotted time making adjustments throughout shift to meet immediate need of resident when necessary and assuring prompt answering of call lights.

  8. Assists with admission of residents, i.e., obtaining admission heights and weights; seeing that personal items are marked and properly recorded; and seeing that personal items are properly put away.

  9. Assists with transfer or discharge of residents assuring proper care of personal items to prevent loss or breakage.

  10. Completes neatly and accurately required documentation according to Nursing Home standards and policies.

  11. Demonstrates good communication and interaction skills when dealing with supervisors, co-workers, residents, resident's families and other departments.

  12. Assists in teaching the resident and/or family, as directed by immediate supervisor, the necessary skills to allow the resident to return the his/her home if applicable.

  13. Participates in performance improvement/quality assurance activities as directed.

  14. Attends mandatory and non-mandatory in-services and staff meetings.

  15. Maintains a strict level of confidentiality concerning residents.

  16. Receives report from immediate supervisor and utilizes assignment sheets and kardexes to maintain knowledge of current resident status.

  17. Assure delivery of optimum resident care by being to work on time, as scheduled and/or providing appropriate advance notification.

  18. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned by immediate supervisor.

 

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Actively participates in the training of new staff upon request of charge person.

Qualifications

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

 Current Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant Certification.

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Is at least 18 years of age.

Is of good moral character.

Is listed on State Registry in good standing.

High School graduate or equivalent preferred.

Previous experience as an aide in a hospital, nursing home, or home care setting preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must possess a genuine interest in geriatric care and compassion for elderly.

  • Must possess a flexible attitude toward differing cultures and life styles.

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.

  • Must possess the ability to plan and organize

  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.

  • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.

  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident's condition.

  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works indoors in well lighted and ventilated surroundings.  Sits, stands, and walks intermittently during working day.  May be exposed to communicable diseases.  Must be knowledgeable of and follow all infection control and safety procedures for position including universal precautions.  Subject to injury and abusing behavior from residents with diminished cognitive skills.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB

Physical stamina with above average physical strength required for bending, lifting, walking, and standing for long periods of time required.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

 

EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Gait belts, bedpans, urinals, physical restraints and/or enablers, wheelchairs, Gerichairs, commodes, shower chairs, blood pressure apparatus, thermometers (regular and electronic), ambulation equipment (canes, walkers, crutches ,etc.), telephone, whirlpool, scales (electronic and regular), mechanical lift and other equipment as deemed necessary in providing resident care.
