Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, controlling, evaluating, and working to fulfill the goals and objectives of the Nursing Department and Tabitha, Inc. under the direction and in cooperation with the Director of Nursing/Assistant Director of Nursing.  The Nursing Supervisor assesses the level of work provided by the nursing staff in compliance with their job description and requirements according to Tabitha's policies and procedures and foster a positive working relationship with residents and their families between nursing staff members, and between nursing staff and other Tabitha employees. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Ensures that optimum resident care is provided by planning, organizing, supervising, and evaluating resident care.
  2. Coordinates overall continuity of resident care by assisting, directing, and monitoring nursing staff, assuring that Tabitha policies and procedures are followed and that state/federal regulations and standards governing health care are carried out. Cooperate fully during the survey process and takes immediate, appropriate action to correct deficiencies.
  3. Assists the Director of Nursing and/or Centralized Scheduling Department to assign nursing staff based on the needs of the residents, the physical arrangement of the facility, and the capabilities of the staff.
  4. Provides directions and monitoring of medications for residents who are receiving medication by Medication Aides.
  5. Provides supervision and education for clients in self-administration of medications.
  6. Resolves personnel problems within the nursing staff, evaluate job performance and working relationships and recommends disciplinary action of employees when necessary and completes coaching as necessary.
  7. Develops and maintains positive customer service with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to ensure that nursing activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
  8. Assists the nursing staff to implement appropriate infection control measures including, but not limited to, hand washing, isolation, disposal of infectious wastes, and the use and storage of cleaning chemicals.
  9. Participate in various committee meetings of the facility (Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance, Safety, Patient Care Review, Medicare, etc.) as required.
  10. Assists with in-service education and staff orientation, working to reduce and limit nursing staff turnover. Assist with quality or infection control related audits and follow-up.
  11. Fosters an environment of staff satisfaction through effective and consistent leadership.
  12. Identifies on-going training needs and ensures adequate training of staff. 
  13. Performs computer back-up functions for medical records including making sure all terminals are turned off prior to the procedure.
  14. Completes an accurate 24-hour census report on residents and sends to appropriate departments.
  15. Willingly takes on additional duties and/or assignments, assisting with projects and responding to requests as assigned or as necessary.

Qualifications

COMMUNICATION: Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand the English language including medical terminology related to the job.  Sufficient fluency to be able to understand and follow written or verbal instructions, provide instruction to others, read and understand a care plan/service plan, policies, procedures or other similar documentation, interact successfully with Seniors/clients/caregivers, hold a conversation, conduct or participate in meetings, compose professional e-mails or other written communication, prepare legible, accurate and thorough documentation as required by the job and interact with TEAMembers, customers, vendors, volunteers, managers and family members effectively.  Ability to recognize and interpret non-verbal cues.   Ability to respond calmly and clearly to emergencies and emotional situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to gain access to the work area and then safely perform the duties of the job while utilizing standard and specialized equipment, including but not limited to the equipment described below.  Physical stamina with the ability to perform duties while moving about the work area for the entire shift with few opportunities to sit down and with little or no break between tasks.   Strength and agility sufficient to assist employees with any or all of their essential functions or to complete their essential functions if necessary.  This includes the ability to lift, push, pull, reach, squat, kneel, bend, carry, twist, pinch, grasp, climb stairs while performing duties (such as bathing, toileting, transferring) and manipulating various supplies and equipment.  Frequent periods of intense activity.  Ability to safely perform unassisted transfers (to and from bed, chair, toilet, commode, bathtub or shower) and otherwise provide care to elder/clients who are weak, frail, obese, unable to assist due to limited mobility, quadriplegia, paraplegia, tremors, paralysis etc.  Ability to remain calm and work effectively when others (such as elder/clients, coworkers or family members) experience emotional extremes, up to and including elder/clients who become combative.  Vision and hearing within normal limits (with or without correction).  Must have unrestricted lift/push/pull ability and pass a 50 - pound physical exam demonstrating strength and agility prior to employment and from time to time thereafter at Tabitha’s discretion.    

AGE REQUIREMENT: At least age 18.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of a Registered Nurse course of study.  Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.  

EXPERIENCE:  One year or more of management experience in a healthcare setting preferred.  Possesses a genuine interest in geriatric nursing and compassion for the aging, terminally ill and persons with dementia.  Maintains a body of knowledge pertaining to current nursing theory and practice, infection control, safety, rehabilitative nursing, dementia care, hospice care, management principles, state/federal regulations pertaining to rehab, dementia, hospice, home care and/or any other relevant aspect of nursing and care for elderly.  Knowledgeable of and follows all safety and infection control procedures for position.  Able to analyze data and use data to develop solutions.

CREDENTIALS: RN License in good standing as recorded on the Nebraska State Registry or other Nurse Compact state required.  CPR Required.  Licenses must be kept up to date at the expense of the employee.  CPR Certification which must be kept up to date at the expense of the employee. Must meet Tabitha's vaccination requirements.
